GEF-ICCA Phase II Project

Enhancing Resilience of Communities of the Etinde Community Forest

Funding partner: Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme and United Nations Development Programme (GEF-SGP/UNDP)
Period: 2026 – 2027

This project strengthens biodiversity conservation and livelihood resilience in nine communities surrounding the Etinde Community Forest, buffer zone of the Mount Cameroon National Park, through agricultural value chains — plantains, cassava and maize — and agroforestry (vegetative propagation and tree nursery management), integrating trees with crops.

Results Achieved

100 farmers and former poachers trained on agricultural value chains — plantains, cassava and maize — and supported with tools and equipment
9 demonstration farms established
Modern beekeeping promoted

UNDP Farm Rehabilitation Programme

Restoring Livelihoods Through Agricultural Recovery

Funding partner: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
Period: Ekondo Titi Municipality

Implemented in crisis-affected communities, this project rehabilitated farms, strengthened farmer capacity, and improved food security and household incomes in the Ekondo Titi Municipality.

Results Achieved

Rehabilitated 20 hectares of farms (cocoa and palms)
20 farmers trained on sustainable production practices: palm, cocoa and cassava
Agricultural inputs (equipment and materials) distributed
Farmer cooperative established and equipped with office furniture
Improved livelihood opportunities created

2024

Training of Trainers for SOWEDA Staff on Plantain and Yam Propagation

FAAFNET delivered a specialized Training of Trainers (ToT) programme to strengthen SOWEDA's technical capacity in modern plantain and yam propagation techniques. The training equipped extension staff with practical skills in seed multiplication and propagation technologies that enhance the production of disease-free planting materials.

GEF-ICCA Phase I Project

Enhancing Resilience of Communities of the Etinde Community Forest

Biodiversity Conservation and Green Entrepreneurship Programme

Period: 2021 – 2022

This project strengthened biodiversity conservation while improving livelihoods in nine communities surrounding the Etinde Community Forest. Activities focused on conservation agriculture, agroforestry, green entrepreneurship, farmer training, food security and climate resilience.

Trained 100 farmers and former poachers in conservation agriculture and agroforestry, yam propagation and plantain propagation (PIF)

2012 – 2013

Humanising the Buea Prison Wall Project

Funding partner: Australian African Community Grants Scheme (AACGS) / AusAID
Period: 2012 – 2013
Location: Buea Central Prison and BORSTAL Institute

This social inclusion and rehabilitation initiative sought to improve the living conditions and rehabilitation opportunities of inmates and juvenile offenders. FAAFNET provided educational materials, vocational training equipment, literacy and numeracy classes, healthcare support, water infrastructure, agricultural inputs, and livelihood training.

2010 – 2011

BONAVADA Water Rehabilitation and Extension Project

Funding partner: African Regional Small Activities Scheme (ARSAS) / AusAID
Period: 2010 – 2011
Location: BONAVADA Communities, Mount Cameroon Area

The BONAVADA Water Rehabilitation and Extension Project addressed chronic water shortages affecting thirteen communities on the eastern slopes of Mount Cameroon. FAAFNET supported the rehabilitation and expansion of community water infrastructure through the construction of additional water storage facilities, capacity building of water management committees, and watershed protection through tree planting.

Results Achieved

Improved access to safe drinking water for approximately 10,000 residents
Community water infrastructure rehabilitated and extended across thirteen communities
Additional water storage facilities constructed with community participation
Water management committees strengthened and watersheds protected through tree planting

2008 – 2009

Practicalising the Teaching of Agriculture and Environmental Education in Primary Schools

Funding partner: UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP)
Period: 2008 – 2009
Location: Buea Sub-Division

This innovative education project integrated practical agriculture and environmental learning into primary school curricula. FAAFNET established school gardens, tree nurseries, and environmental clubs while training teachers and pupils on sustainable environmental practices.

Over 600 pupils and 20 teachers empowered through practical agriculture and environmental education

2006

Gender-Sensitive Eco-Guide Training Workshop

Funding partner: Dja Foundation, Netherlands (Stichting Dja)
Period: 2006
Location: Limbe Botanic Garden, South West Region, Cameroon

FAAFNET implemented a Gender-Sensitive Eco-Guide Training Workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of local youth and practicing eco-guides in sustainable tourism management within the Mount Cameroon landscape. The training enhanced participants' skills in environmental interpretation, visitor management, guide-tourist relations, and biodiversity conservation. By promoting local participation in ecotourism, the project contributed to employment creation, environmental awareness, and community-based conservation initiatives in the Mount Cameroon region.
